Fashion’s finest gathered in New York City this May for its biggest night to celebrate the opening of the annual Costume Institute exhibition at The Metropolitan Museum of Art Gala. Every year, the coveted exhibit is assigned a theme to celebrate the work of a respected fashion designer.
This year, the museum honored the avant-garde work of Rei Kawakubo / Comme des Garcones and her fascination with contrasting themes (East/West, male/female). The invite-only VIP guests (about 600 of them!) were encouraged to dress the theme and not a single soul in attendance disappointed us.
Take a look at our top five favorites this year.
Katie Holmes | Zac Posen
Luckily for Suri, Katie has saved some of her Met Gala gowns for when her daughter gets older, including this off-shoulder, tiered deep-green beauty.
Laura Osnes | Christian Siriano
We’ll take a delicate spaghetti strap, cut-out gown with billowing waves of pink tulle any day.
Giselle Bundchen | Stella McCartney
You can count on Giselle for stunning looks every time she walks down the red carpet — and the arm candy isn’t bad either!
Lily Aldridge | Ralph Lauren Collection
Lily made our jaws drop for a number of reasons.
1. White caped Ralph Lauren Collection gown
2. Sky-high Balenciaga boots
3. Bright pink mesh piece draped over her face
Rihanna | Comme des Garcones
This isn’t something we’d wear every day, but we applaud Rihanna for embracing the avantgarde theme. This Comme des Garcones piece of art was a show stopper for us.
